Make an appointment with the audience. General promos and generic time frames have little or no impact on recycling audience. If you want listeners to tune into the station outside of their normal listening patterns there has to be a strong incentive. Give them a specific element at a specific time. Be specific not general.
USe benchmarks! They can be anything from an update to a bit to a regular feature. The benchmark gives the audience a specific hook or handle to listen for.
Tease! Tease! Tease! Tease! Tease! One of the simplest forms of extending listening is teasing through the break. However, the tease must be intriguing. The National Enquirer was on the money when they said, “Inquiring minds want to know.” The best compliment a listener can pay an air talent is to tell them they absolutely hate it when they have to stay in their car to hear what is coming up!
